So Great a Cloud of Witness

Our monthly “testimony meeting,” with testimonies shared by the scattered Saints of 1907. See here for more background.

Louisiana.

I bear my testimony to the truthfulness of the gospel, and to the divinity of Joseph Smith’s mission. I know the Book of Mormon to be a divine record. I am glad I live in the dispensation of the fullness of times, when God speaks to His people. May all the faithful be blessed, is the prayer of your brother in the gospel. – Newton A. Finklin, Gonzales, La.

I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God and I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, just as divine as the Bible. I embraced the gospel in the year 1903, and I am proud to say I am a “Mormon.” Your sister in the causes of truth. – Mary R. Finklin, Gonzales, Ascension Ph., La.

Michigan.

To Liahona The Elders’ Journal: In this letter is my tribute of gratitude to thee, not only for the light you give to the scattered Saints, but for the help you are to those who are seeking the true gospel. Also you will find here my testimony that the gospel as taught by the Latter-day Saints is true. I have passed through all three stages, desire and belief and at last came knowledge, not only to myself but to my daughter also. We were baptized last July by Elder W.E. Beazer, and have been growing in knowledge ever since, and in our small way helping others to understand. We know this great Latter-day work is the Lord’s, that the Book of Mormon is just what it purports to be, and that Joseph Smith is a true prophet of the living God.

I know I am exceeding the limit of sixty words but I would like to add a few more, as I think them of great importance. My daughter is lame, caused by an injury to her spine when three years old. She has walked with a cane since she was seven years old. Last November during the conference held here by the elders, several of them administered to her, and she has walked without a cane ever since, and is slowly but surely recovering.

The elders also administered to my niece, Maud Lake, 13 years old, who has been suffering from a nervous trouble for years. She has fully recovered, in fact the change in her is marvelous. She will be baptized this spring if the Lord is willing. Words cannot express my gratitude to my Heavenly Father for all the blessings He has bestowed on me and mine. – Mrs. Mary E. Bowman and daughter, Miss Rena Vern Bowman, 329 Regent St., Lansing, Mich.

Missouri.

I want to give my testimony that this latter-day work is of the Lord, that this is the true church of Christ, and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of the living God. The Savior placed in His church certain officers, including apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, etc. How long were they to remain in the church? Till we all come to the unity of the faith. Have we come to the unity of the faith? Look at the many denominations and judge if that prophecy has been fulfilled. – Wm. L. Crisp, Joplin, Mo.

Through studying the scriptures, and by faith and prayer I am able to bear my testimony that the gospel is true, that Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, and that Joseph Smith was called of God to be a prophet in these last days, to prepare the world for the great Millennium. – Melvina T. Crisp, Joplin, Mo.

North Carolina.

To the readers of Liahona: I want to bear my humble testimony. I venture to say I know that the gospel the Latter-day Saints teach is true, because I have enjoyed the blessings of heaven. I have once been administered to and healed through the power of the Lord. Dear friends and investigators, if you feel in your hearts that this Church is true I advise you to enter in at the straight gate by baptism. I can assure you, you will enjoy the greatest blessings if you are faithful. I have been a member of this Church ever since last July and words cannot express the many blessings I have received. I know the gospel as taught by the Latter-day Saints is true. – Mary C. Furr, Bloomington, N.C.

Dear Liahona, I will write a few lines to bear my testimony. I believe the gospel as taught by the Latter-day Saints is true, because of he many blessings I have received already. I have enjoyed the best health and the mots happiness since I have become a member of the Church I ever have had in my life. Things that were once dark to me I can now see through clearly. I understand the truth now as I never did before. I believe that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of the Lord and that the Book of Mormonism true. – Eliza Jane Hathcock, Big Lick, N.C.

I want to bear my testimony. I know that the gospel the Latter-day Saints teach is true. The things I once could not understand now seem plain to me. I understand things now as I never did before. I hope all investigators of truth will see it plainly, and take up their cross and follow the Savior in baptism. – Annie Hathcock, Big Lick, N.C.

I gladly bear testimony to all men that I know the gospel taught by the Latter-day Saints is true. It is reasonable and scriptural, fulfills prophecy and is opposed by all powers of darkness. This Church is organized according to the pattern, with blessings following. Above all the Spirit of Truth bears witness to the divinity of this work. Praying the Lord to bless all His children I am your brother in the gospel. – J.M. Hiatt, Mt. Airy, N.C.

I am satisfied the doctrine taught by the Later-day Saints is true, because it agrees with the Bible as far as I understand it, and the spirit bears record to me. Asking all to remember me in prayer I am your sister in affliction. – Nancy A. Hiatt, Mt. Airy, N.C.

I know the gospel of Jesus Christ taught by the Latter-day Saints is true, for God has revealed it to me through faith and prayer. I want to say to all people who seek after truth with honest hearts, God will show them the way. Be humble and sincere. Pray for His Spirit to guide you. God is just. – Susan E. Bergdorf, Anadarko, Okla.

You ask for my testimony, how I know that the gospel as revealed to the latter-day Saints is true. The Bible and Book of Mormon prove it to be true. The prophets say it is true. And even now my own heart thrills with the assurance of its truth. I rejoice and praise God for this knowledge through the comforter. – Mary Leonine Williamson, Hominy, Okla.

Pennsylvania.

I wish to be counted among those who have a knowledge of the gospel, and am pleased to have the opportunity of testifying to the same. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet. – Mrs. Rose A. Card, Emporium, Pa.

To the readers of Liahona: – The editor has kindly invited us to bear our testimonies through the columns of this publication, and I feel thankful for the privilege. I can say to you that I know the gospel taught by the Latter-day Saints is the gospel of Christ; that Joseph Smith was just what he claimed to be; and that we are living in the dispensation of the fullness of times. I testify to you that my knowledge of these things was revealed to me by my Father in heaven. I lie not, and I hope to be judged by these words at the last day. – Sarah E. Seward, Memphis, Tenn.

The gospel as given through Joseph, the prophet, is true, without any doubt in my mind. Why I say this is because I prayed to God to lead me to the truth. Soon I heard it from the elders. It satisfied my soul. The troubled waters became calm. I quit the tobacco habit without any trouble. Before I couldn’t. – C.M. Capel, 962 Elmwood Ave., Memphis. Tenn.

I have a testimony of the gospel. I know it is true, and I thank God for this knowledge. I know this is the true Church of God. I have many trials where I live, but God’s people are a tried people. I have seen miracles performed in my own house. I know Joseph Smith was a true prophet of the living God, and I know the Book of Mormon is true. I was baptized Dec. 3, 1899. – Sallie Cain, Alba, Texas.

I am well pleased with the gospel. We have the truth and we know it. If the gospel is worth anything it is worth all. Remember our tithing and the Word of Wisdom. We are promised that the windows of heaven shall be opened so that there will not be room to contain the blessings we shall receive. Liahona The Elders’ Journal is the best paper I ever read. Brethren and sisters we cannot do without it. – S.L. Posey, Elba, Hardman Co., Texas.

Wisconsin.

It is with pleasure we accept the privilege of bearing our testimony to the truth of the Book of Mormon, and the wonderful latter-day work, as set forth by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We feel that God has wonderfully blessed us with a testimony that it is all true, and that we have been visited by the power of the Holy Ghost which has verified the truth of these things to us; therefore we feel justified in saying that we know these things are true. – John Nelson and wife, Cadott, Wis.

(In an accompanying letter, Mr. Nelson explains that his investigations began last October, and he expresses the hope that he and his wife will soon be baptized. He names Elders James E. Yancey and Hyrum Stocking and President D.G. Elmunds of the Wisconsin conference as missionaries whom he has met. He fears the people do not appreciate their testimony, which they must accept, or reject to their condemnation. – Editor.)

  1. This brings back some memories for me. When I was a service missionary at the CHL one of the projects I worked on was extracting information on the missionaries from the journal serving in the various missions. Where they were called from and to, the date their mission started, dates of transfer and release and who their companions were. Couldn’t help but read some of their experiences. Some were faith promoting, some hilarious, and some sad. Loved serving there!
