Speak to Me Kindly.
Speak to me kindly, dear papa, only speak kindly to me,
And I will try to do all things pleasing to mamma and thee;
Oh, if you knew how the harsh words fall on the heart of your child,
Driving away all the sunshine, making me reckless and wild.
If you would only speak kindly, I could be better, I know;
Lovingly always correct me, showing the way I should go.
I may not always be near you, and were I absent or dead,
Then I am sure you’d be sorry for each harsh word you had said;
I know I ought to be better, and I would be if I could,
And with your love to assist me, I will improve till I’m good.
If you would only speak kindly, I could be better, I know;
Lovingly always correct me, showing the way I should go.
I can’t read music particularly well, so when I was reading the text I could hear the melody to “Dear to the Heart of the Shepherd” instead!
Thanks, this is one I knew nothing about.
