My Neighbor’s Song

My Neighbor’s Song

By Sylvia R. Grant

I put a snowy white wash on the line;
But my neighbor can sing a song.
I scrub my pans till they sparkle and shine,
No other floor is more spotless than mine,
Here no dust ever lingers long.
My window panes reflect glowing fire
From the rays of the evening sun.
Folks passing by do not stop to admire
Mine — for my neighbor’s are open near
And from out of them comes a song.

  1. What a wonderful thought, to put these two poems into conversation that way!

    I tried to explain recently why I choose some of the women I do to share in the ward’s Relief Society newsletter. None of those women fit the stereotype of the 21st century Wasatch Front Latter-day Saint woman, any more than most of us living women do. I choose their stories in part because they DO show that there is more than one way to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and — just like your two wash-day neighbors — they show how variety and each of us offering our own gifts brings so much more to life than if we were all the same, all of us writing poems or all of us getting our whites whiter-than-white, even when there’s value in each task.
