“Send someone to us who can sing”

“We pray that the young people at home may awaken to the performance of their duties. Again we appeal to you to learn to sing and read music. We need singers in the field. The cry is heard from nearly every conference. ‘Send someone to us who can sing.’ Each day’s labor causes us to love the Gospel more as we see its beauty shining above the doctrines of men.”

— Marcus Farr, of Ogden, elder serving on Long Island, New York, 1898

(This plea for musicians — organists, pianists, singers, choir directors — was a common one in the letters of missionaries for many decades)

  1. In my mission experience, having missionaries with musical skills came in handy. And they/we were certainly made to feel valued. But this emphatic way of saying it here strikes me as a little different. Almost like it was a necessity: “We need singers in the field. The cry is heard from nearly every conference.”
