So Great a Cloud of Witness

We continue with the brief testimonies shared by the “scattered Saints” in the pages of the Liahona, in 1908.

Ohio.

My education is limited, but I know positively that Joseph Smith was a prophet of the Lord, and I believe the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true Church. How I know is by their works. I had been sick quite a long while and Elders Green and Gray came and prayed for me, anointed me and laid hands on my head and I got better immediately. I am not a member of the fold yet, but if the Lord lets me live I will soon be. I believe that the Lord sent the good elders to our house. O how proud their mothers must be to have such boys! – Mrs. B. Thomas, Ohio.

South Carolina.

I believe Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, as also were all of his legal successors. I believe the gospel is restored to earth as it existed of old, and that all that will accept it and obey its teachings will be saved. I have been a member of the Latter-day Saints’ Church for five years and my faith is stronger today than when I joined the church. – A.D. Gray, S.C.

—

I am a Latter-day Saint, and I believe I have accepted the gospel in its fullness. I believe that the gospel was handed down to Joseph Smith and that he was a true prophet of God. I thank my Heavenly Father for it. With His help I will remain in the church as long as it stands. – Fannie Gray, S.C.

—

I am not a member of the Church of Latter-day Saints. But I have heard several of the elders preach and am fully convinced that they are preaching the gospel in its purity and I shall apply for baptism at the first opportunity. I have not seen an elder in twelve months. – Eugene Bunting, S.C.

—

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. I believe with all my heart and soul that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. I feel for a certainty that the gospel is being preached by men called of God. It is the only church in which man can find perfect peace and consolation for his soul. – O.D. Bunting, S.C.

—

I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ and I know that the gospel as taught by the Latter-day Saints is the true plan of salvation. I know that Joseph Smith was indeed a true prophet of God our Eternal Father, and if we will live up to the teachings of the gospel and remain faithful to the end we will be sure to gain eternal life. – Annie Stokes, S.C.

—

I know the gospel is true and that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and the instrument in His hands in establishing this mighty work. I know that the elders are servants of God and were divinely called as was Aaron. – Mrs. Dorothy Tucker, S.C.

—

I know the gospel is true. I was investigating and was in doubt. I promised my wife that I would pray for one week that if it be the true gospel, the Lord would send the elders to me at the last of the week, and to my joy and surprise Elders Owen and Philips, both strangers to me, came to the place where I lived, and I made arrangements to be baptized. I have also been healed of a broken leg. It was broken in two places, and I was crippled for four years. I had Elders Bush and Noon anoint me, and my leg was healed in 48 hours. – N.J. Lamb, S.C.

—

I am proud to bear my testimony to all in your valuable pages. I know the gospel is true. This knowledge was obtained through dreams and by direct revelations from our Father in heaven through our Advocate Jesus Christ. I also know that Joseph Smith was a prophet, in very deed, and I would be glad if the world knew the same. – W.H. Gilstrop, S.C.

—

It is with great pleasure that I testify to the world that the church which is persecuted more than any other is the true church. I believe that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. He would have failed had he not been, in the face of the persecution he had to bear. – Mrs. Mary S. Gilstrop, S.C.

Tennessee.

Although not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I have been an investigator six years. I began with the view of rejecting what I considered a false doctrine, with the result that I was caught in my own net, and as a member of the church has said, I am spoilt for anything else. – R.L. Grissom, Tenn.

—

This is to certify that I have a testimony of the gospel, and I am not ashamed of it, for it is the power of God unto salvation. I want the world to know that I know that the “Mormon” elders are the only men who have a right to baptize. I know that they are God’s people. I was shown this not by anyone on earth, but by the power of God. There is only one true Church, and it is called by the world the “Mormon” Church but its right name is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet, and that the Book of Mormon is true. – Rosa Howard, Tenn.

I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true church. I believe Joseph Smith was as true a prophet of God as ever lived on the earth. I know the gospel that is taught by the Latter-day Saints is true. I have seen the sick healed through the administration of the elders. I also know the Book of Mormon to be true, and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of the living God. – Zora Bailey, Texas

I have been a member of the church ten years, and I know that the gospel is true. I also know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God in setting up His Kingdom for the last time. I have been blessed in many ways since I joined the Church, and am glad to bear my testimony to the world. – Mrs. Maggie L. Knight, Lydia P.O., Va.

—

While I have not a knowledge of the gospel, I do believe it is true. I know its blessings are enjoyed in the Church. I have seen the sick healed. – G.W. Marshall, Va.

—

I was baptized Sep. 3, 1893. Having made a careful study of the teachings and doctrines of the church, I am ready and willing to bear my testimony that it is the work of God, and that Joseph Smith was a prophet of the living God, for no man could do the work he did “except he be of God and God be with him.” – F.J. Guthrie, W. Va.

Alabama.

I know that the gospel as taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the ancient gospel restored. I also know that Joseph Smith was Jehovah’s agent in bringing about “the restitution of all things spoken of by the holy prophets since the world began.” – Amanda Roberts, Ala.

Roberts, Ala.

Florida.

I believe that the Church of Christ with all its original organization, ordinances, gifts and spiritual power has been re-established on earth and that the humble elders are preaching the gospel of our Savior. Our son John was restored to health by the power of God through the administration of the elders. He was able to rise immediately after being sick some weeks with a heavy fever, and been bleeding from mouth and nose several hours. Others of our family have been restored to health by the power of the living God through the laying on of hands. – Susan E. Hill, Fla.

Papa is not a “Mormon,” but he says it’s true, and I know it is. We all keep the Word of Wisdom since we were baptized, and when we get sick mamma wants the elders. – Master Fred M. Cawley, Ga.

—

I have had my children, also myself, administered to by the “Mormon” elders several times and have always been healed. Wise, Ga.

  1. Thanks for these.
There is the possibility of intriguing stories behind some of them — particularly the Cawley family of Georgia.
I’ve also been interested to see a bit of the role healing by the elders seems to have played in a number of conversions reported in these Liahona-published testimonies. I haven’t heard much of that in my lifetime in my little corners of Mormondom.
