Reflections

Reflections

By Rose Lee Bond

What do you think I did last night?
I lighted a lamp, and there in its light
I saw your face as it used to shine,
Two loving eyes looked again into mine.

While in this dream the flame burned low;
As it flickered and died, you seemed to go
Back into the twilight, from whence you had come,
Leaving me breathless, and glowing, and young.

  1. Was it an untimely war death? An accident? Or maybe just a youthful romance that didn’t work out?

    And somewhere, there was probably an arch-conservative fuming that the Improvement Era was encouraging spiritualism via lamp chimney.
