Elders’ certificates — or those issued to Seventies — were and are the license granted by the Church for a missionary to perform as a missionary. Here’s such a certificate, made out in a familiar name.

  2. Wow – this Certificate issued from a different time! For one, the language used is ornate and very detailed. Plus, the entire First Presidency signed this certificate! Also, I notice it’s signed in the “Territory of Utah.”

    Very cool find.

  3. That must have been signed the day he left for his mission to the Southern States. April 10th is the day my great-grandfather and J. Golden’s missionary companion for a year left on his mission. I didn’t realize they’d left together.

  4. The one I was issued has lost a lot of the flourishes of 1883, but you can still see the textual connection.
