Thanks, again, for these kinds of posts, Ardis. (And I see that chin whiskers are your Achilles heel? 🙂 )
Apparently so, Gary, when they’re pointy and paired with a waxed mustache. *sigh*
I’m a little surprised by how old they look. Elders these days look like boys to me, even if they’ve reached the ripe old age of 20. These missionaries, not so much. I don’t know if they’re actually older, or if it’s just old-fashioned hair and clothes, or the marks of a harder life than I’m accustomed to. It’s not that they’re old — but they look older than I expected them to.
A lot of them may actually be older — this is still the era when married men served, and where a lot of men served a second mission — but I know what you mean. The formality and different styles make it hard to judge.
Thank you! I read through every name. And sometimes I know somebody!
I tracked down a few familiar names, and can confirm what Ardis says about their ages. For example, H.C. Kartchner, in the Louisiana picture, was born in Snowflake, Arizona, in 1892, just a year younger than his first cousin who later married my grandfather. So he would have been 22.
And Jesse M. Smith (New Haven), another Snowflake boy, was born in 1891. But before leaving on his mission he had graduated from the Snowflake Stake Academy, completed a two-year program at Northern Arizona Normal School in Flagstaff, and taught for a year at the Snowflake Stake Academy. So he was 23, but had had a lot more life experience than the young men who are serving missions these days.
A quarter century after that photo, Jesse M. Smith became a counselor to my grandfather in the Snowflake Stake Presidency, and two of his daughters later lived–and one still does live–in New York City. Maybe his service in the Eastern States Mission rubbed off on them!
I notice that Melvin J. Ballard is in several of these. Was he a visiting general authority, or just lucky, or was he the one who had the camera and would organize group pictures?
And I scored by finding a relative. Wallace Roundy Is in two of these.
Carol, he was president over the Northwestern States Mission. Since most of these group pictures were taken at mission or local conferences, he was nearly always there.
Congratulations on your finding a relative!
Thank you for putting up the Manitoba Conference photo!!! Elder Whitney was here to dedicate the newly built Chapel. I have a letter he wrote to Pres. Joseph F. Smith, he had just been in Minnesota and then came here. He said how very British Winnipeg was, as it was the summer of 1914 and WW1 had just begun and people were assembling for war.
I think of you whenever I have something to post from that part of Canada, cameron. 🙂
German E. Ellsworth is in the Manitoba Conference, in the Michagan photo with his wife, and also in the Minnesota photo.
Another mission president (Northern States Mission) getting in all the photos during his mission tours!
Thank you!!!!
