  1. My mother-in-law was the daughter of a sugar beet farmer. She said it was so labor intensive that it was only possible for a farmer with a large family of free labor–and that it was a logical way to support a large family of children by using their labor. She’s not wildly fond of sugar beets.

  2. Good to see generic promotion of the sugar beet industry and not just certain sugar companies in the ol’ U&I vs. Amalgamated Sugar Companies. I guess C&H is right out, not being beets but cane sugar.

    (FYI, refined sugar is fungible)

  3. I was raised on a farm that my father raised sugar beets. Very labor intensive–thinning, hoeing a couple of times in the season, then harvesting by topping by hand. I do not have overly fond memories of sugar beets. My father raised them until I was into my 20’s. He stopped raising them because of less help (labor) and a factory to process them.
