Guest Post: Nauvoo Temple Model

I was asked on fairly short notice to teach a Primary lesson on the construction of the Nauvoo temple to a group of ten-year old girls. My inspiration took a structural bent.

If I’d had more time I would have made better use of a straight-edge, etc., but I was fairly pleased with how it turned out, and I thought other people my want to improve upon my efforts. I copied the pattern onto cream cardstock (scrapbooking section of Joann Fabric and Crafts) on the church copier. The girls had no trouble cutting the model out, but weren’t patient enough for glue to dry, so we used tape as well. There are a few interior cuts. The trickiest is cutting the tower so that it can be rolled and glued into a cylinder. My round hole punch just barely reached far enough to cut out the round windows on the side. (I think they were oval in real life.) I had some battery powered tea-light candles for another project (Walmart on-line) so I stuck one inside. The holes weren’t really necessary because in a dark room, the whole model glows a golden color.

It’s far from perfect, but I was fairly pleased with how it turned out, and the girls liked it too. If someone improves on the model, please post.

  1. Super cool. Thanks for sharing. I like how it’s a good representation of the Nauvoo Temple, but without being overly complicated to make. (And, I know you said that the holes weren’t really necessary, but from the photo, the window holes are one of my favorite features.)

  2. I gave my sister-in-law one of my copies. She used it in Primary to introduce a song from this month’s Friend Magazine that begins: I see the light of the temple at night.

If anyone else can use the idea, it’s a win!
