And now we are in an era where most folks do not have a phone at the house, just a phone that we carry as individuals.
Older folks in our ward get frustrated because they have to make so many (to them) long-distance calls just to check on home teaching.
If I were the one with the no-long-distance cell phone, I think I’d make the effort to call them first. At least I like to think I’d do that.
Ardis, Any idea what the “one dollar per month” meant? Cost of telephone service? Cost of paying for telephone over time?
Just based on my memories of the ’60s when the phone company owned all connected equipment, I suppose it must be the hookup and equipment and service for the month, the whole package. (Remember the days before modular jacks, when an installer actually had to come into your house to hook up your phone, and you could have any color you wanted, as long as you wanted black? 😀 )
I think, way back when, you actually rented the phone from the phone company as well?
