“Young and Handsome”

“Mormonism keeps men and women young and handsome; and when they are full of the Spirit of God, they have a glow upon their countenances; and that is what keeps you and me young; for the spirit of God is with us and within us.”

– Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 5:210

  1. A good sentiment. Isn’t this from his talk when Thomas B. Marsh returned to the church and rejoined the saints? It’s followed by quite the roast of brother Marsh, if I remember correctly.

  2. One of my favorite picture collections is the Bathsheba Wilson Bigler Smith Collection at the Church History Library (PH 8004). Most of the pictures in the Portraits section show aged pioneers, all of them looking very rugged, and it’s touching to see their wrinkles and think of what they must have experienced during their long lives. There’s something to be said for being “young and handsome,” but there’s also something to be said for being aged and weatherbeaten and experienced.

  3. “[A]ged and weatherbeaten and experienced” is a euphemism for “old and decrepit.” At least that’s my personal experience.

  4. Well, I just checked, and Leif Enger still hasn’t written a third book. I liked the first two.
