The “Phrases and Clauses” of Barry Wride Harris

Barry Wride Harris (1890-1952) was born in Juarez, one of the Mormon colonies in northern Mexico. He served a mission to New Zealand from 1910-1912, then attended the Brigham Young High School (a department of BYU, at Provo, where students benefitted from the assets of the University and also served as subjects for the University students going through the Normal Course, i.e., learning to become teachers), graduating in 1913. He was honorably released after brief service with the U.S. Army during World War I. I don’t know where he got his undergraduate education, but he earned a Master of Theology degree from the University of Southern California, in 1929, with his thesis subject being “A Case Study in Christian Science Healing.” I suspect he was not well off financially – he is described as a “car tester” in the 1940 census, and when he registered for the World War II draft he was employed in a federal make-work project. He spent most of his adult life in Los Angeles. So far as I can tell, he never married.

Those are the facts I can glean through an internet search. The one thing that sent me on a search for his life is not on the internet, though.

At some point in his life, Barry noticed what we all notice, and sometimes ridicule – the repetitive, inelegant, sometimes infelicitous standard wording of Mormon prayers. You know, the “nourish and strengthen us and do us the good that we need” and “bless the sick and afflicted that they may be here next time.” Unlike most of us, though, Barry tried to do something about it.

Around 1930 – although he may have been working on it long before then – Barry produced a list of what he called “Phrases and Clauses that May be Introduced into Prayers,” and began circulating it among the Mormon literary class, hoping to find a sponsor for what he hoped would become a respected publication. It didn’t catch on, and was never published.

Perhaps Barry had a good idea: Prayers become rote because we don’t think of what we’re saying and merely repeat what we’ve heard and heard and heard. Suggesting other ways to express our “thank you” and “please” might help us break out of a rut. That, I think, was the impetus behind the “suggestive prayers” of seminary texts circa 1935 – these were not prayers to be recited at the end of class, but merely intended to teach students how they could adapt a rote closing prayer to take into account some of the principles taught in a lesson. And aren’t there times when we need to express the inexpressible? when, for instance, with the sudden and unnatural death of an innocent?

Barry’s “phrases and clauses” did not meet the need, however. First, in my opinion, they don’t express the kinds of things I include in my personal prayers, and for the most part are not topics I would introduce into my prayers before a class or congregation. Second, they aren’t particularly graceful, in either sense of that word – they are not especially poetic despite their frequent alliteration, and they do not convey any special understanding of faith or a sense of speaking under inspiration or with any particular connection to the divine; rather, they are self-conscious and ponderous and pretentious. And finally, they are badly arranged: Should I need help in finding the words for a prayer, a listing of phrases alphabetized by their first word, rather than keyword or subject, would be useless. Better, I think, would be a listing by topic of prayer; better than arbitrary constructions by a not particularly gifted writer would be a collection of scriptures or poems or actual prayers that addressed a given topic and that could inspire me with their beauty.

I am posting one version of Barry W. Harris’s “Phrases and Clauses” as he circulated them – not the full alphabetic range of phrases, but the selection he thought best represented his work, while protecting him from anyone who might present his full collection as their own. (!) His attempts to gain support also included a sample prayer constructed almost entirely from his “phrases and clauses” – and you will see how cumbersome and inarticulate they sound, how little they communicate with either God or man, when you see his sample prayer. (Don’t mind the length, though, although we all would be uncomfortable listening to any prayer so lengthy – let’s assume its length was due to a desire to incorporate as many of his “phrases and clauses” as possible, to show them to what Barry hoped would be their best advantage.)

We could laugh at this. If I could watch you skim through this list (it’s long, but you’re not going to do more than skim, I think), I would expect to see your eyes first widen with incredulity, and then to see you take refuge in humor because the collection is certainly ludicrous. But along with the almost inevitable laughter, maybe we could remember that this was one man’s sincere attempt to offer something of value to the Latter-day Saints. It wasn’t successful in that – but it does illustrate a willingness to serve, however weak one’s gifts might be. No need to speak more highly of this project than it deserves, but let’s avoid any mean-spiritedness.

PHRASES AND CLAUSES THAT MAY BE INTRODUCED INTO PRAYERS.

PREFACE.

The author of the following phrases and clauses has been impressed during his lifetime with commonplace terms employed in most prayers uttered by Latter-day Saints. So it is with the thought of introducing variety and vividness into prayers, given on various occasions, that these suggestive expressions have been formulated.

Many speakers have been prevented from clothing their thoughts and feelings with appropriate words, either through lack of natural fluency, or lack of scholastic training. The writer shares with them these problems.

It is possible to develop a complete prayer from one of these expressions, and it is also possible to combine the thoughts in various ways. A typical prayer that might be constructed, is therefore given at the close of the compilation.

This work does not represent a complete product. It simply indicates what might be accomplished.

And then here is the sample prayer Barry constructed to showcase the possibilities of his “phrases and clauses”:

Heavenly Father, we approach thee in humility and thanksgiving at the beginning of this, another session of conference, and we express our gratitude for the kind watchfulness thou hast always extended in our behalf. As believers who desire to perpetuate a knowledge of thee and thy kingdom, we sense the wisdom of honoring thy name in word and deed. We wish to acknowledge thee as the fountain of all that promotes happiness and progress, and we solicit thy co-operation in the gaining of knowledge and the attainment of a broad and deep insight into our relationship with thee.

We feel deeply indebted to thee for what knowledge we have of thy wonderful work, and this day seek a continuation of thy sympathy and encouragement. We wish to acknowledge thee as the king of righteousness, one whose dominion endureth forever, and whose ever-lasting kingdom is greater in glory and majesty than the human eye can visualize, or the understanding comprehend. It is with humility and reverence that we express our appreciation for that which we have received, and we ask that thou wilt help us learn those things that will contribute much toward our spiritual efficiency and our progressive ideals.

Help us to consecrate our lives to high and noble purposes, develop in us strength and power to always pursue the right, and inspire us to exert every possible effort to accomplish that which will add growth and development to our highest living, that we might gain thy confidence, grow in thy love of progression, and become worthy of thine exalted apportionments.

The stupendous task of equipping ourselves with enduring truths in the defense of righteousness, impresses upon us the importance of being alert always to divine messages; that our thoughts and emotions might be illumined by the silent teachings of the spirit of truth, and that we might mould our characters in harmony with divine expectations.

We take consolation in the promise that thou wilt reward abundantly those faithful to thy requirements, and we glory in the assurance that defenders of righteousness will be compensated beyond their present capacities to understand. We therefore pray that thou wilt help us to become victorious in this struggle for spiritual accomplishment. Hold us steadily on the path of progression, fill our understandings with strength and wisdom from on high, and direct the experiences of this day into channels of wise living; that we might be strengthened in the way of righteousness, guided in the way of truth, and inspired in the way of progression.

We are earnestly desirous of qualifying as candidates for that goal of achievement that is reserved for the righteous, and it is our desire to advance steadily toward the light of divine truth. Influence us vitally this day by thy power, that we might partake freely of that which will contribute toward our spiritual growth. Renew our faith in thy power to give us strength, steadily supply us with divine encouragement, and develop our capacities for co-operating with the forces of the divine, that our abilities for discovering those channels of wise living, that point to an exaltation in thy kingdom, might receive strength and refreshment, and that our lives might be enriched by that living vitality which comes from thee.

Let thy spirit overshadow every thought and act of our lives that our thoughts might be rich with valuable ideas, an dour acts full of enthusiasm for the right. We desire that thou wilt exercise supreme control over our tendencies in life, that we might struggle intelligently to gain spiritual strength and wisdom, until we reach that standard of perfection required of all faithful adherents to righteousness.

Give us a comprehensive understanding of our sacred responsibility, as loyal adherents to the plan of truth revealed, bind us to thee, the fountain of all that is great and good, and imprint upon our souls a thorough knowledge of thy laws, and the pattern of advancement thou hast restored. That we might receive the keys to the mysteries of thine exalted throne, be clothed with honor and majesty and crowned with the redeemed in thy Celestial Kingdom. We now commend ourselves unto thee, praying that thou wilt be our companion, our guide and our strength.

  1. He omitted, “No harm or accident fall upon us…” 🙂

I can appreciate the intent here. I’ve leafed through an Anglican Book of Common Prayer and seen the eloquence there. (Perhaps best known for the marriage rites “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish…”)

I think as Mormons we lean too heavily on Matthew’s admonition to avoid vain repetitions. In a perfect world, I’d like our public speaking to be less reading and more extemporaneous, and our public prayers the opposite.

  2. I totally understand his motivation and the goals of this effort, but find it ironic that he proposes replacing the oral traditions we have incorporated into our prayers with a much broader set of written phrases. But even skimming the list, it appears that this list is long on obedience and the fruits of our work, and short on grace and humble petitioning.

I sympathize with what TOC talks about in terms of written prayers. That might improve things in the short run, but given our current willingness to glean our sacrament talks mostly from general conference addresses, I would foresee the proliferation of blogs and websites publishing those written prayers, and people starting to do the same copying from a written tradition. We have specific word for word prayers relating to certain ordinances, but mostly free rein with our public prayers at meetings.

  3. Perhaps this is why I find the awkward prayers of new converts curiously refreshing.

  4. I was asked to substitute for the Gospel Doctrine teacher yesterday which gave me a bully pulpit to discuss one of my pet peeves under the topic of ‘reverence.’

Our common farewell, ‘goodbye’ is a contraction of God be with you. But many people shorten it further to Bye, or see ya, or something else quick and easy, a ritual syllable or two that means the conversation has ended. I’m not going to fight that one, or go around telling people ‘God be with you’ unless it seems particularly appropriate.

But I am greatly distressed by the number of Latter-day Saints who end their prayers with “Namma G Cry, Amen.” Our entire right to petition God rests upon the fact that we ask in the name of Jesus Christ. It is the most important part of the prayer. It’s not just a way of saying ‘Over and Out.’ I would like to have people think about what they are saying, and not just rush through the last syllables because they’re in such a rush to go on to the next thing.

  5. I love the Book of Common Prayer. But I also love Jane Austen, and I’m afraid that this collection of phrases reminds me less of Thomas Cranmer, and more of Mr. Collins “arranging such little elegant compliments as may be adapted to ordinary occasions.”

  6. I shouldn’t be so unfair. The resemblance did suggest itself, but awkward flattery of Mr. Collins is significantly more ridiculous than the sincere work of Bro. Harris.

  7. You have to admire his effort. I love that people were willing to do such work. Thanks for enlightening view, Ardis.

  8. Contrasting this to the Book of Common Prayer–a thought that came to mind before I saw the other comments–should remind us that writing prayers, like writing humor, is difficult.

There were a few of his phrases that I thought would be good, and maybe a closer read would turn up a few more. But “satisfactory schooling in spiritual information” just doesn’t make it out of the starting gate.
