Whole Year Through: Millennial Star, 1951

January

“During the past year, the Book of Mormon has been used extensively as an integral part of tracting. … We have made no attempt to sell the book. It has been offered freely for anyone who wishes to read. … Because of the vast number of books which such a means of proselyting requires, it has been necessary that each individual missionary buy many copies for this purpose. Naturally it runs to quite an investment, and therefore when someone kindly offers help, it is always welcome. Recently Sister Vontella H.B. Kimball made such an offer and graciously donated to the missionaries in the British Mission 1,000 Books of Mormon to be used in this wonderful work. Sister Kimball’s son, Stan, only recently completed his mission here in England after having laboured originally in Czechoslovakia. The cover picture this month shows President Stayner Richards accepting Sister Kimball’s cheque to purchase the books.”

.

February

“Our cover this month shows the manger in the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem. The photograph was taken by Elder Stan Kimball on Christmas Eve, 1950.”

.

March

“The cover drawing this month was done especially for the Millennial Star by Elder Douglas A. Wallace. It portrays the two important ideas of Easter and emphasizes the one which Latter-day Saints’ stress – the resurrection. Whereas many focus their attention on the cross and the death of Christ, we worship the resurrected Lord, our Saviour and Redeemer.”

.

April

“Spring is the season of youth and festivity, the season of Green-and-gold. Our cover-chorus, photographed during the floor show of one of these annual Balls, typifies the wholesome spirit of the M.I.A.”

.

May

“1951 will undoubtedly be a landmark in the history of Britain. The cover drawing this month is a sketch of the main site at the Festival Grounds. Opening this month, the centenary celebration of the Great Exhibition of 1851 will not close until September.”

.

June

“These Relief Society sisters, doing their monthly teaching in the early days of the church, typify the spirit of that organisation. In the first days of its history the members were exhorted by the prophet to ‘provoke the brethren to good works in looking to the wants of the poor, searching their objects of charity and in administering their wants – to assist by correcting the morals and strengthening the virtues of the communities.’ These ideals remain the same today.”

.

July

“July, month of remembrance. Fifteen thousand for the cause of religion driven from their homes. Fifteen thousand afoot, with ox-team, wagons, handcarts. Driven over the prairies, desert and mountains; through a frontier land of Indians, dust, and death. Exodus to greatness. This is the place!”

.

August

“The members in the First Presidency of our church – First Counselor Stephen L. Richards, President David O. McKay, and Second Counselor J. Reuben Clark jr. – today lead and direct the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. These modern-day Prophets have the same calling, the same authority, and the same responsibilities as the first ones called to that office – Peter, James, and John – had. They are God’s representatives on earth, and merit our love, respect, and obedience.”

.

September

“This is September, and another harvest nears. We remember the industrious Gleaners, and humbly recall the miracle of the gulls when, in 1848, the crops of the Latter-day Saints were saved from the ravenous crickets. And in bringing these things to memory we thank the Lord for our many daily blessings. The green and gold of the cover are the M.I.A. colours.”

.

October

“Little Red Riding Hood, a classic that brings fresh enjoyment to each successive generation, was chosen for this month’s cover because it remains the most universal symbol of life’s ‘Enchanted Years.’ Monthly, the Millennial Star spot-lights The Children’s Page – a column written especially for Latter-day Saint boys and girls, a column teaching correct ideals and standards, a column directed by the British Mission Primary President. Have you been making the most of it in your home?”

.

November

“Great Britain is one of the most fascinating lands in the world. From the highlands of Scotland to the beaches of Brighton there are an incomparable number of ‘beauty-spots.’ Southampton artist, Bert Sales, has made a pen and ink sketch of one of these – Hampshire’s ‘Christchurch Priory’ – especially for the Millennial Star. The historic old structure, combining at least three different architectural styles, is near palm-dotted Bournemouth and the New Forest.”

  1. I love this series of covers from the Millennial Star. Elder Stan Kimball gets mentioned in two of the comments. My first thought was that must be Stanley B. Kimball, one of the great experts on nineteenth-century Mormon trails. I knew he had been a missionary in Czechoslovakia and evacuated to England. Wikipedia confirms that he would have been in the British Mission in 1950. We can thank him for the photo on the February cover and his mother for her donation to purchase copies of the Book of Mormon. I wonder if she traveled to England to meet Stan at the end of his mission.

  2. I’m glad you picked up on who Stan Kimball was — what a great contribution he (and his mother) made.
