From a Pioneer Day interview, 1929, of Paul Hammer –
“I went on a mission to Austria Oct. 16, 1883, and traveled with Thomas Biesinger. I was nearly arrested while in Vienna, but managed to elude the police and go to Prague. On more than twenty occasions I resisted arrest by leaving cities in time. I was warned several times in dreams. In one I dreamt that a policeman laid his hand on me and said, ‘You are my prisoner.’ Later I learned that a warrant was out for my arrest, but they could not find me and as I had left the city, no arrest could be made. While in Herschberg I contracted smallpox, and again learned a warrant for my arrest was issued when I should leave the hospital. When nearly cured and waiting to leave I made my escape from the hospital and went back to Vienna, where I baptized two women. Again went to Munich to escape arrest for preaching the gospel. President Cannon of the Swiss-German Mission hearing so much about this sent me to Denmark to complete my mission. Elder Biesinger was arrested and served some time in prison, and on one occasion I had to serve nine days.”
Ah, they don’t make missions like they used to … 🙂
A couple in my ward have been called to a mission in Russia, the ward learned Sunday. The husband is a lawyer and his assignment will be the church’s general counsel office. Besides his professional experience, one thing that may help him with the assignment is having been arrested when he was a young missionary in France.
John, let’s hope that experience isn’t of practical help to your ward member in the next few years!
