Augustus Sutter tried to keep the find a secret because he guessed correctly that once the information was leaked, all of his employees would take off for the gold fields, leaving his fields untended and his sawmill unfinished. (According to his memoir).

Of course, before Sam Brannan made the announcement he’d taken care to set himself up to profit from the information. Sam ended up dieing a pauper in Escondido, CA and I’ve often wondered, given the ending, if he felt everything he’d said and done was worth it.
He’s buried in San Diego’s Mt Hope cemetery and his grave was one of those side trips I never got around to making when I lived in the area.
Is that gold in that bottle or something else?
My great great grandfather, Ira Jones Willes, and his brother Sydney mustered out of the Mormon Battalion in San Diego and headed back to join the Saints in the Salt Lake Valley. They were at Sutter’s Mill, helping to build a millrace where the first gold was discovered. Sydney and Wilford Hudson went prospecting on the American River. Their discovery was considered the second big strike of the California gold rush. Ira and Sydney abandoned their construction job and spent their winter panning for gold. When they arrived in Salt Lake the following spring, Ira brought about $1400.
I have a button from Ira’s Mormon Battalion uniform that was made into a brooch. There is a small bit of gold set into the center of it.
