Returned to room late.

Buenos Aires – I gave Spanish lesson to the missionaries. They are making good progress. I visited a Mr. Gonzalez, and made an appointment to meet with him and his family at 6 pm to teach them the Gospel. At 6 pm went with Elders Sharp and Stoddard to his home and spent a pleasant and profitable evening with this man and family, consisting of his wife and several children. He asked a very many questions, giving me a good opportunity to explain to him the principles of the Gospel. Most of his family have for some time been attending our meetings and I consider the family as very good prospects. Studied Church History.

Ballard, Bro Stoof and wife went to Hoppes at Lamis to arrange for a German Sunday School. Bro Stoddard was ill and stayed at the rooms. Day was warmer and very damp. At night a heavy fog. Read considerable Church History.

Buenos Aires – Gave Spanish lesson to missionaries. They are making splendid progress. Read a great deal of Church History from Vol 6. In the evening received letters from May and Nena telling me Nena was doing fine, and might leave the hospital May 25. I am certainly thankful she has done so well. At night I wrote a letter to May, so it might leave with boat which goes Monday. Sunday is so busy, I have very little time to write them.
Sunday, Junio 20, 1926
Buenos Aires – Bro Ballard, and Bro Stoof and wife went to Hoppes and held German Sunday School. Myself and Elders Sharp and Stoddard went to Liniers and had a very successful Sunday School, 45 present, with splendid spirit and attention. After we had Bible class with about 12 adults and about same number of larger children. German Sacrament meeting at 4 pm. German lecture on Church history at 5 pm, about 6 German people besides Saints present. Spanish preaching meeting at 7.40 pm, about 20 Spanish speaking adults and some children. Bro Sharp spoke well. I followed. German work is being given a great boom, and much more popular than Spanish (not to my approval)
Monday, Junio 21, 1926
Buenos Aires – I received a sweet letter from Melba. Also a letter from Bro. Huish, Sec of Mex. Mission. All well at home and in the Mission. Gave Spanish lesson to missionaries. Went to dentist’s but could not have tooth put in as gum is not properly healed yet where they burned it off a week ago. Put in considerable time studying Church History. Damp, foggy weather with several hard showers during the day and night.

Buenos Aires – Gave Spanish lesson to the missionaries. They are making rapid progress. Read considerable Church History. I bought a pair of rubbers for $8.00 (pesos) My shoes have not been dry for two months, the ground is so damp all the time. Rubbers will keep soles off ground. Went early to Kullicks’ and held meeting at 7.30 pm. One German investigator and four Spanish speaking present. Bro Sharp spoke first, then Bro Stoof spoke in German, and I followed in Spanish. The way we are trying to do this Spanish and German work together is like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time. Sister Kullick gave us a fine supper. Home 12.

Buenos Aires – Gave Spanish lesson to the missionaries. Finished reading Vol. 6 of Church History. Worked on some hymns I have translated, getting them into better shape. Went to Friedrichs, and not withstanding the wet, sloppy weather, which is the worst I have seen here, we had 20 Spanish speaking people present and a very good meeting. Bro Sharp made a good talk and I followed. After this meeting two German women came in, and a German meeting was held, Bro Stoof doing the preaching. The mud was terrible and all walks very slippery. Sister Stoof fell while walking to meeting. Foolish to have ventured out on such a night.

Buenos Aires – Sister Stoof not feeling well. Elders got breakfast and dinner. I gave Spanish lesson to the missionaries. After dinner went with Bro Ballard and Stoof to Doc Sud and spent afternoon doing German tracting and at 7 pm we held German meeting at home of Bro Biebersdorf. Four investigators were present. Good Spirit. Elder Stoof spoke nearly an hour. On returning home I found letters from Emaline, Bp Pierce, Mississippi Shipping Co., Sister Rudellat, Elder E.L. McClelland, Sister Jesusita Monroy, and Jules Perrin. Bro Ballard received word from Presidency that he and myself might return home when in his judgment he thought the new missionaries could hand the work. !Good News!

Buenos Aires – Sister Stoof better this morning. I gave usual Spanish class to missionaries, making good progress. Wrote a letter to Jules Perrin, a member, advising him of our location and asking him to come to meetings. Studied some from Essentials of Church History. Also examined Swedenborg’s “Nueva Jerusalem.” At 3 pm held a very successful meeting at home of Sra. Molares, with 43 in attendance. We enjoyed a splendid spirit. Bro Sharp spoke well and then I followed. Spoke 45 minutes of Personality of God. Had a social evening with the missionaries in our rooms.

Buenos Aires – Gave Spanish lesson to missionaries. Studied Essentials of Church History. Wrote letters to Elder Huish, Sister Monroy, and Sister Rudellat. In afternoon went to Villa Ballester and spent all afternoon trying to locate Bro Jules Perrin, but without success. He is a Swiss-French member of the Church who came here a number of years ago. He wrote me from Calle Florida, Ballester but gave no number so it will be hard to locate him.
Sunday, Junio 27, 1926
Buenos Aires – With Elders Sharp and Stoddard I went to Liniers where we held a fine Sunday School with 45 in attendance, and the children were the best prepared and best behaved that they have ever been out there. Right after we had scripture reading class with 30 present. More adults than usual. Had dinner with Sister Friedrichs. At 5 pm German meeting in the Hall. Good turn out of Saints but no German investigators. Sister Sifuentes and Molares present. Bro and Sister Stoof did the speaking. At 7.30 pm we held Spanish meeting with 31 people present. Elder Sharp spoke 30 min, very well. I followed for 40 min. Very good day. Bros Ballard and Stoof with Sister Stoof held German S.S. at Hoppes in Lamis with 21 children.
Monday, Junio 28, 1926
Buenos Aires – Gave usual Spanish class to missionaries. Arranged with owner of the house to cut some flues to put in stoves in kitchen and big living room. We to Dentist’s and had cast of teeth made and made appointment of Wednesday to have work finished. With all the missionaries we went to Parque 3 de Feb. and to the place where on Dec. 25, 1925 Bro Ballard dedicated South America for the preaching of the Gospel. A little service was held, and I carved on the tree by which we stood, the following. S.A. DEDICATED DEC. 25/25. Afterwards we visited Zoo with the missionaries. Read Essentials of Church History in the evening.
Tuesday, Junio 29, 1926
Buenos Aires – I gave usual Spanish lesson to the missionaries. Spent rest of forenoon writing letters. Wrote Melba, Emaline and Betty, Bp. Pierce, Pres Wells, Elder McClellan. In the afternoon I typed letters for Bro Ballard. One to Presidency. Later we went to Kullicks’ in Lamis and held meeting at 7 pm. There were about 15 Spanish speaking people present, and all greatly interested. One German lady and her son. I note on the part of Bro and Sister Stoof, especially the latter, a great disposition to favor the German work and German speaking people, even to the extent of incivility to Spanish speaking people, where Germans are present. If followed it will do great injury to the work. Sister Stoof impresses me as not being a broad-minded person.
Wednesday, Junio 30, 1926
Buenos Aires – Morning was foggy and miserably wet. I gave regular Spanish lesson then went to the Dentist’s and had a tooth put in. Wrote to May and also typed several letters for Bro Ballard. One to Twelve. Went to Friedrichs and held meeting with about 30 people. Roads almost impassable for mud. After meeting went and had supper with an Italian family who have been coming to our meetings, and spent two hours with them. Taught them how to ask blessing on the food and how to conduct family prayer. Elders Sharp and Stoddard were with me. The letters written today will leave tomorrow.
Favorite take-away line: “The way we are trying to do this Spanish and German work together is like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time.”
I liked that line, too. That’s what my life feels like right now.
More of the Kullicks, and I hope they find Jules Perrin! And he’s reading Swedenborg. I wonder how many missionaries nowadays would pick up Swedenborg!
A prescient insight.
