Angela Torres Elizondo: First Visiting Teaching, Then Baptism – Then More Visiting Teaching

This is another bit that was posted on the Facebook page for She Shall Be an Ensign that I want to preserve here at Keepa.

Angela Torres Elizondo’s activities were centered on her family and home in San Antonio, Texas – she had a husband to care for, and six living children to raise. She did like to talk to her neighbor, Cruz Muñoz Ziegler, over the back fence when both were working in their yards.

Cruz was secretary of the Spanish Relief Society in San Antonio, and a visiting teacher. Once, in 1927, her companion couldn’t go with her and, seeing Angela working in her garden, Cruz went out to ask if Angela would accompany her on her rounds. Angela didn’t have any idea what “visiting teaching” was, but it was a chance to get out of the house, so she agreed to go.

Angela loved her experience that day. She began attending Relief Society just so she could be a part of the visiting teaching program, and she served as a substitute visiting teacher whenever the opportunity arose. After her baptism in 1929, she became a regular visiting teacher.

She taught and converted her family, and they went to the Mesa Temple to be sealed in 1945. One of her daughters, Beatriz, moved to Los Angeles and served as president of the Spanish Relief Society there. Another daughter, Evangelina (Eva), served a full-time mission in the Spanish-American Mission. After her return from that mission, Eva was called to be her mother’s visiting teaching companion.

The picture is of 73-year-old Angela Torres Elizondo and her daughter Eva, on their visiting teaching beat in 1951.
