Sunday School of Joseph, Utah, 1897

Mary Lou Lillian shared this photo with me two years ago. I recently found it when I cleared thousands of emails out of my box …

She writes: “Here is the photo of Joseph, Utah Sunday School about 1897. At the far left is John Ross, Superintendent of the Sunday School and Bishop’s counselor. At the far right is Edward Newby, brother-in-law to John Ross and one of the men administering the sacrament in the Minutes of Joseph, Utah, 1891. The Rosses and Newbys (the wives were sisters, Sarah Ann Wells Ross and Elizabeth Wells Newby) left Millcreek Ward in the Salt Lake Valley in 1873 and settled in Joseph. They lived in a dugout and used the wagon boxes at the sides of the entrance to the dugout as a kitchen area. Later they built a two-room adobe home.”

  1. So glad you found an opportunity to post this photo. I have other names of people in the photo but am not sure how accurate they are. If anyone is looking for an ancestor from Joseph around this time, I would be glad to help. I love keepapitchinin and check in regularly! Thanks for sharing your research and talent.
