Latter-day Saint Images, 1914 (4)

This post is almost exclusively male. That’s what happens when you’re casually using Mormon historical sources, even when you’re normally attuned to women, if you don’t make a very deliberate effort to be inclusive.

Caleb W. Haws, a missionary from Salt Lake City, died of smallpox and was buried in the churchyard of Darton Parish, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, in 1871. In 1914, Elders John P. Latham (Wellsville), Henry L. Young (Salt Lake City), Wiley S. Collett (Vernal) and Lorenzo R. Packer (Rexburg, Idaho) posted for this picture by his grave.

  1. Wheels of memory turn slowly this morning, but I finally figured out why the name Logan Brimhall was familiar. After his mission and several years of trying to finish school, he joined the faculty at Snowflake High School, where he was a colleague of my grandfather for the next quarter century.

And, I was puzzled by the description of George D. Kirby from the mixed double quartette from Sugar City, and then I realized that he was just another bass who couldn’t catch a b-reak.

  2. Thanks, Gary, I appreciate that you always like these posts.

And Mark, you wise-, uh, wiseacre, I’ve corrected the typo, while preserving the original error so that your comment still makes sense. Never say I don’t love you.

  3. If the building is still in existence, it’s not used by the church anymore. There is one church building in Huntsville, and it appears to be of 1960s vintage. The stake center, between Huntsville and Eden, is more recent still.

  4. I just saw your edit on that quartet caption. I’m not even going to hint about the image your “correction” conjures up.

  5. The concept of Mormon boys working in potato fields in Rigby brought about one of the most important inventions/innovations in the world’s history. Many thanks to Rigby, potatoes, and Philo T. Farnsworth.

  6. Double score for me on this one.

I know the Groom family from Rigby (home of the TV-inspiring potatoes).

And, my great grandpa Heaton is in the Northern States Mission picture. I’ll be posting that to the family page.

  7. Earl J. Glade, the manager of the Utah Stake MIA chorus, was later an executive with KSL Radio, was instrumental in starting the Music and the Spoken Word program with that station, and was elected mayor of Salt Lake City in 1944.
