The People Behind the Names

Last week I posted brief minutes about a single LDS meeting aboard the David C. Shanks – six men and one woman attended that wartime (1944) meeting.

Coffinberry has been identifying those Latter-day Saints, beginning with Bernice N. Thomas and continuing with Victor D. Greenberger, DeWayne George, and now Gene E. Lewis. kevinf has also contributed information about the New Zealander aboard, Trevor C. Hamon.

This is a remarkable thing. People sitting at keyboards far from paper archives have been able to find personal details and write brief reports that make these people feel like brothers and sisters, not just names in a list.

If you haven’t yet checked the link to those comments, you might want to. Keep checking back, too, because I have a hunch that Coffinberry isn’t going to stop until she has found all of them.

  1. I’ve been following the discussion with awe. Collaborative history and online research are wonderful things. Thanks, Ardis, Coffinberry, and Kevin!

  2. I don’t know why I felt such an itch! to do this. But I just had to scratch it. Most of the temple work has been done (I see that a descendant of Lyle’s has reserved his work so it is going to be done); the only undone thing seems to be Victor’s sealing to his parents, and his parents’ work. I’ve entered the information into family search; there does seem to be a possibly inactive or non-member granddaughter, so maybe someday she or another family member will find this information and be able to submit the work.
