My Tryst with Christ
By Ray M. Johnson
At close of day, O Christ, I come to you,
So swiftly on the lightning wings of thought;
To spend this holy moment, and renew
Those lofty visions that to me you’ve brought.
If I have spent the day in some low vale,
Or merely climbed a hill when mountains lured,
I’ll meet you when the evening skies grow pale
And in your presence find the hurts all cured.
Or if some fine achievements crowned the day,
I’ll place the crown on your more worthy head;
’Tis you who helped me tread the victor’s way.
’Tis by your matchless life that I am led.

This is my favorite place to find poetry that I go back to again and again.
Aww!
Some I choose not because it’s particularly good, but because it’s funny, or has an especially Mormon subject, or because the author represents a less-typical place or age or time. But it’s satisfying when a poem really is technically good, or especially heart-felt, or simply speaks to a meaningful subject, isn’t it?
