A Clean Face: The View from 1922

From the Improvement Era, April 1922 –

A Beautiful, Clean not a Decorated or Enameled Face Greatly Helps In Judging the Kind of Ladies Men Naturally and Openly Praise, and Quite Respectfully Say: “These Useful, Valiant Women are ’Xcellent, Youthful, and Zealous.”

  1. I didn’t even realize what was going on here until it got to “xcellent”! I’ve never been able to tell if someone was valiant just by the lack of face decoration/enamel, though.

  2. I could have posted this with the Saturday humor, I suppose, but it hit me that even something silly like this was a man’s criticism of a woman’s choices. Your comment, Mike, hits both elements. Thanks.

  3. I like that the clean face helps in judging, not that the clean face is necessarily praiseworthy on its own. 🙂

  4. My granddaughter’s middle name is Roczy. I thought that Roxzy might be alphabetically more interesting, but Roczy was the spelling used by the person they were honoring.

  5. I thought this was a very strange sentence until I got to the X Y Z like Mike R. did and then went back to read it again.
