The Spanish Fork Relief Society and Militia

The Spanish Fork Relief Societies were organized in 1857 to outfit the local militia as it prepared to defend the Territory against the US Army.

  1. Our next big activity, that they have been talking about for weeks, is making poinsettia blossoms out of pipe cleaners.

  2. I don’t understand my ward. They go on and on about ward RS activities (sometimes valuable, sometimes not) and barely mention stake activities. Whole women’s conferences with speakers brought in from out of town (even former general RS presidents!!!), humanitarian activities, etc. barely mentioned. Why are we limiting ourselves when there is so much that can be done? (and I don’t just mean service projects)

  3. I think that 4 out of the last 5 activities have been dinners or cooking demos with ample “samples”. I don’t bother going. I’d complain, but you know how that might go…

  4. It’s amused me to read historical diaries and see the same kinds of concerns back in the 1880s, Tiffany and ErinAnn. Balancing the service, social, and spiritual aspects of Relief Society is complicated and has been for at least 130 years!

Grant — even in my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined the day when I would become a (very) minor expert on the early history of Spanish Fork. The reason, of course, being that some of our earliest black Saints were members of those first Spanish Fork Relief Societies.

    Thanks, all, for your comments.

  5. My YSA ward Relief Society recently just won the year-long War of the Closets, which means now they can have one of the many closets in the Relief Society room all to themselves.
