Some readers can access Keepa from one computer (usually home) but get this notice when they try to access Keepa from another computer (usually work):
.

.
Keepa has been subject to so much spam that earlier this year, you and I were both shut out for hours on end by what amounted to a Denial of Service attack. (Not a coordinated one, I’m sure, but the effect was the same.) Because of that, IP addresses responsible for even a single piece of spam are blocked from ever again connecting to Keepa.
Unfortunately, some of the tricks I’m trying have blocked legitimate readers – maybe I’ve mistyped an IP, or maybe somebody in your company using the same IP has been involved with spam, or maybe it’s something else.
In order to find you in the list of blocked readers, I need to know your IP. I can then search for it, and remove you from the list.
If you have been blocked, please visit another blog that I am just beginning to develop: The Family Skeleton and leave a comment on any post (there’s only one there now). I’ll then have your IP and will fix the problem.
Naturally, you’ll have to post your comment from the computer which is being blocked, not the one you’re reading this on today.
If you are skeptical that a small blog like Keepa is subject to that much spam, here’s the report of one single would-be spammer (and tens of thousands of them target us).

.
I had a spammer manage to get past the protections at one site I administer, and the next morning I found that his robot had posted a spam message every two minutes all night long. Took a while to clean up.
They really are psychopathic criminals.
They are. They would take down the entire Internet if we didn’t practice eternal vigilance.
Dangit. I clicked over to that other site and got TOTALLY sucked in to the story there.
LOL, JeannineL — that was one of my first (maybe the second) brick wall breakthrough I ever made, and I’m glad I documented how it happened. That blog will be a place for me to dump a lot of genealogical material so I can refer cousins from all lines there and not have to pull it out of my files repeatedly.
Thanks, Ardis. I’ve missed reading your material. Would you like this post repeated on others’ websites to reach former readers (or future) who may not have an auxiliary means of reaching Keepapitchinin?
I avoided getting “TOTALLY sucked in” at that other blog, but the name “Wyckoff” caught my eye. It’s an old Brooklyn name (or should I say Breukelen?), and there’s a Wyckoff Street just half a mile from my home. The Wyckoff House, parts of which date to the 17th Century, is about a 30 minute drive east of here. (Open to the public for tours Fridays and Saturdays at 1:00 and 3:00.) The Wikipedia entry on the Wyckoff House has the following to say about the man who built the original house:
John Mansfield, I wouldn’t mind the information circulating anywhere there are lost Keepa readers. Thanks.
Mark B., your Peter Wyckoff is indeed my grandpa a generation or ten back. I really do have Dutch uncles.
Well, my work network doesn’t like Family Skeleton, but the problem’s on my end now. Sometimes those things are short term, sometimes not. Times and Seasons has been blocked for several years. Millennial Star was blocked for several months once.
John, if you happen to know your work IP, or can get it by having someone check it for you through another blog’s comment, send it to me at aeparshall at aol dot com and I’ll try with that.
Even easier than having someone check your IP through another blog’s comment, just googling “what’s my IP” works.
Didn’t know about that, Mike R. Thanks.
