Ardis, thanks for posting this! We used to sing this all the time in Primary, along with 10 or 12 other Halloween songs. That was back when it was okay to sing about Mr. Jack-o-lantern, crooning streams, exploding apricot trees, horsey-horsies, winking crocodiles and talking bunnies (There was a little house in the middle of the woods…) There were Primary Festivals, Dance-Speech-Quartet-Music Festivals, roadshows, Relief Society Bazaars. The church was a wonderland, an entire universe in which you could thrive and have fun and be giddy with playful happiness.
Even when the pioneers were plum tuckered out, they sang and danced and played. Maybe as a church that’s what we’re missing these days. Without space for the brilliant yellow/pink blast of creativity, it’s easy to put on a dour uptight pickle face and not even know it.
I remember singing Halloween songs in Primary, which back then was held not on Sunday, but during the week. The activities could be more secular, and we had several songs that we sang every year, only during October. I was very young and had a fascination for them. Our chorister had some Halloween-themed visual aids, and my favorites were in a minor key– that, plus the celebration of fright piqued my young interest.

Mark B. mentioned this to me last night. I sang it for him. Now it’s stuck in my head along with preschool songs. Obviously it stayed in my less conscious head for all these many years.
I’m just trying to imagine this appearing in the Friend of today (and wishing it could).
Here’s one more Happy Halloween song memory from the big yellow song book. (Anyone remember that? songs about The Motor Boar, Grandpa’s Farm and Washington – who dressed so very funny?)

Thanks Ardis. I’m just old enough to remember weekday primary. I recall singing this song in the late 70’s along with a song about “There were three jolly fishermen”. Fun memories!
