We Thank Thee

We thank Thee our Father in Heaven above
For blessings you give us, through kindness and love,
For pretty warm sunbeams, that sparkle and gleam
As they shine on the dewdrops or dance on the stream.
We’re thankful to Thee for the flowers so fair
That cover the meadows and nod everywhere,
We’re thankful for showers that fall on the land
For streams of pure water, and mountains so grand.
We’re thankful to Thee for our parents so dear
For brothers and sisters, to mingle with here,
For more than all this we are grateful to Thee
And hope in the future more worthy to be.

This would make a lovely children’s hymn.
Page 7 of the Children’s Song Book has the following words:
I thank thee, dear Father, in Heaven above,
For thy goodness and mercy, they kindness and love.
I thank thee for home, friends, and parents so dear,
And for ev’ry blessing that I enjoy here.
Help me to be good, kind, and gentle today,
And mind what my father and mother shall say.
In the dear name of Jesus, so loving and mild,
I ask thee to bless me and keep me thy child.
The music was written by George Careless (1839-1932) but the words are listed as ‘anon.’

That’s it! That’s the song that was nagging at the edges of my memory! There was something familiar about this, but I couldn’t dredge it out. Thank you.
The rhythm is generally the same, and the sentiments are, if not exactly the same, at least a close cousin. Most of the words are so different, though.
