From the Notebook of J. Golden Kimball (3 of 3)

Some last notes from the speaker’s notebook carried by J. Golden Kimball:

A nephew of mine from Arizona said to an Apostle, “I love to hear Uncle Golden preach.” This extraordinary man answered: “I am glad someone loves to hear him preach.”

It’s educational as well as humiliating to learn how inconsequential you are. I am sometimes alarmed for fear I will lose the little personality, individuality and originality I have and out of fear of men cease to open my mouth and give the Lord a chance to use me as an instrument to play the crudest and most ordinary tune.

Your mind is your thought factory. We must be broad minded, kind, loving and forgiving and do our own thinking. Narrow minds make narrow views and such men spread about them pin headed ideas and are obstructions to the progress of the church. Lincoln said, such men reminded him of Steve Michles, “his head was full of ignorance but he’ll know how to get home when the time comes.”

After one has been herded in all kinds of pastures for a life time with the sweepings of humanity, one begins to realize why they are sweepings. They haven’t been bred right. Men and women can’t choose their parentage, so that all of God’s children cannot come from pioneer stock, the hardy and adventurous, the idealists, the builders.

It was the men and women close to the soil, who settled Utah. Of them it has been truly said: that the cowards never started on this pilgrimage to the Rocky Mountains, and many of the weaklings died on the way.

We of that race of people are of God’s selective breeding. We haven’t known ease; we have not wilted like hothouse plants; we’ve been healthy and living as we had to, close to the soil, we think clean, healthy thoughts

Young men marry for a selfish desire only, and not for love of the race. They pick a flapper and either commit race suicide or raise scrubs. An intelligent girl of a good breed will follow where her heart leads and take a long chance on letting come what will. Young people, steer away from modern civilization. Don’t stress money and massacre your species by marrying a woman to keep her in idleness, to deny her sufficient interest in life to make her life worth living. Don’t make your wife mark time on the road to eternity, for if you try it she will learn to hate you.

I am tall, slender and inconsequential, that is, unimportant, which puts me in mind of a story, a young girl of my type got on a street car. Two young flapper girls of the grammar grade decided to make this tall young lady feel cheap. They said to each other, Isn’t she tall, and slim? She must have been raised on yeast. The tall girl replied: You poor little scrubs, if you had been raised on yeast, you would have been better bred.

A pretty girl from Boston got on the street car. In her left hand she held a book – Browning – which she was busily reading. Her right hand was in a muff. A dapper young man all dolled up entered the car and sat beside the lady; cheeky as they are, he put his hand in the other side of the muff. The young lady faced him with a withering look and said: Young man, I’ll give you 30 minutes to take your hand out of my muff.

I am inclined to believe that we do not hear straight, talk straight, see straight and think straight. We preach too long, talk too much and kill the very truth we want to put over.

-ooOoo-

I try to deal in the crudites of truth. In my public talks I feed the people on some chaff and a few grains of wheat and take it they have ordinary common horse sense and will choose the wheat.

-ooOoo-

Kind words never die. There are no little things. Do a kind act, speak a kind word, give cheer and courage to others and reach out a helping hand to the down and outer and you are sure headed in the right direction.

Wives and husbands are mostly foolish. A little love, respect, patience and to give and take, and occasionally a kiss and a cuddle, would make out of a hades a heaven.

Horoscope

When I was a babe in the arms of my mother she had a Natal Figure struck off by a man who was an astrologer, a Latter-day Saint. He says of the native, J. Golden, that many extraordinary, configurations are observable and many positions not often to be met with, emanating the constellations and the stars, et cetera, at his birth.

It gives the native powerful friends and he will mix with people of superior order and in high rank in the course of his life.

The signs give a sure token of honor and renown and a name that will live after death in history.

Another sign gives him a very public name, a name that shall be mouthed in many places in the world, and he will bear a position to be envied by many.

Such positions of the heavenly bodies are very scarcely met with and they are sufficient to raise a man from the dung hill to set even with princes and governors.

This native is of strong mental power, hardy and stubborn in his own way. None will govern him for he will possess superior qualities of mind, a very lofty and unbending spirit more proper to govern than be governed. The native will have a lofty spirit but a noble pride, with a kind of patient, affable, and generally a smile on his countenance, but when he is moved he will be as gold as a lion. In the house of religion the native will be unfortunate and he will have to suffer much on account of his religion.,

I realize more than any other time I am held responsible for what I say, but I resent being censured for what I do not say, or think, or how the other fellow interprets.

Once upon a time I was called on the carpet on account of a talk I made. One of the brethren, who is now dead, said: “You must quit shocking this people.” I replied: “Some of you brethren will have to stop putting them to sleep and call on me to wake them up.”

-ooOoo-

I claim not to raise the dead, but I can arouse the Saints who come to meetings to sleep and rest, but often am forced to use unseemly language to put it over.

The great religion of the future will ultimately be universal. It will be Jesus Christ’s religion. It will be the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as His methods never change.

It will be a religion of faith, repentance, baptism and the Holy Ghost. It will be one of joy, peace, hope, charity and “love one another.”

-ooOoo-

To be great in the Kingdom of God you must be converted and become as a little child.

As a repentant, converted child of God you can begin to confide in the Lord by going into some secluded spot and kneel down humbly and pray without fear or doubt and commence to talk to God in a clear and distinct tone and pray slowly.

Don’t utter lamentations, and name all your ailments and worries and troubles and fears and conclude by telling about your finances and your debts and then whine and squeal about your bad luck.

You must learn to love God for His perfection, His mercy, His justice and that you are His child and He can hear and answer. He knows what you need before you ask. You can confide in Him and trust Him to give you what you need. Because He does not give you all the things you want you must not lose faith in His wisdom and good judgment and feel forsaken.

  1. Glad you enjoyed them. It almost makes me want to keep such a notebook … but mine wouldn’t be as funny as his.

  2. A couple of these near the top seem to have a heavy flavor of the eugenics movement popular between the first and second wars.
