    Nice how he sneaked in that reference to the “author of “These Amazing Mormons!” All to avoid the too-frequent repetition of the name of the one guy who is writer, editor, publisher, typesetter, photographer, etc., etc., etc.

    I wonder if it was really allowed for wards and stakes in 1949 to sell books from any publisher at a profit? I suspect not. And I wonder how many enterprising EQ presidents turned their home teachers into book sellers?

  5. Kevinf, it is my recollection that the ward Seventies Quorum used to do exactly that (sell LDS Books at a profit) as their fundraiser. This memory comes from the early 1970s in Indianapolis.

  6. Coffinberry, now that you mention it, I think you are right. Fortunately, as a current ward mission leader, we don’t have that issue. One less thing to feel guilty about.

  7. My experience from the 1960s and 1970s in suburban DC matches that of Coffinberry.

    FWIW, the 40% discount is the traditional discount that book publishers gave to retailers. The only thing that might be unique here is that Weston was apparently conceding the discount to anyone who purchased at least 10 copies, instead of just bookstores and other bonafide retailers.
