Here’s an early picture of Eagle Gate, the entrance to Brigham Young’s properties in Salt Lake City. His family schoolhouse is visible to the right; the Beehive House is just out of the picture to the left. Today, the Eagle Gate is much higher and wider, spanning State Street and corralling much of the traffic headed to the Utah State Capitol.

Isn’t the original eagle from the eagle gate on display somewhere?
Jim, the original eagle was, I understand, pretty well rotted when they sheathed it in copper. Maybe somebody took a sample out at that time, but to the best of my knowledge what remains of the original carving is still there, under the metal.

Ardis, I’ve seen the original eagle in the basement of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum. Harold Schindler once did a column on how the original monument was hit by a truck in the 1950s and had to be replaced by a wider one that allowed for modern traffic.
I’ll have to do some checking and report back — and I won’t mind reporting that I’m wrong. That just doesn’t feel quite right.
